Match Scenario 1: You Have No Matches

Let me start with a correction: you do have matches. Every man who has tested their Y-DNA “matches” every other man at some level even if it is 235,000 years ago. What this situation really means is that you’re not seeing your closest matches conveniently listed on a match report or on a company’s website and you’ll have to look harder. There are still other testers in the database who match you more closely than anyone else, but they may be too distant to share common ancestors with you in timeframes that are important to your genealogy.

While there certainly can be other unusual circumstances, normally if you “don’t have matches” it’s because either you have unusual mutations or you’re on a relatively under-tested branch of the Y-DNA haplotree.

What I mean by “unusual mutations” is situations like:

With STRs, having deletions, recLoHs, (see Chapter 5) or other mutations that drastically increase the genetic distances between you and other testers. Check your markers for zeros that would indicate deletions. You can also join a haplogroup project (see later) and get help analyzing your markers for any unusual situations.
